Artists Statement
I find that my art starts with my surroundings. In 2018, I moved to Silver City, New Mexico from Austin, Texas and began to find inspiration all around me. I live in a funky little house with lots of windows on top of a hill in town. The windows offer a view for miles, often reflecting light and scenes onto each other. The views always open my artist's mind and help keep me inspired to create.
I love to drive into the Gila National Forest to be among the trees. In 15 minutes, I am in a completely different environment and mood. It is often cooler; there may be snow when there is none in town. I love that transition. New Mexico skies are amazing, especially in monsoon season. Animals walk up into my yard and birds are everywhere. I am very much influenced by the wildlife.
Another thing that intrigues me are the moments between being awake and asleep. There is a magic there that I yearn to capture and play with. I also have found night to be a whole different thing than it is in the city. To me, the number of stars in the New Mexico night sky falls into the realm of magical. I find myself making more drawings set at night.
My emotions, influenced by things that happen in my personal life also find their way into my art. Some of my favorites were done during a rough, dark time. There is an element of story in each. I think that a viewer finding a story for themselves is part of the fun. There is no right or wrong story.
I create these pieces on an IPad using the Procreate app. The process involves drawing with an electronic pencil, so these are actual drawings, not a technical process. Since they are digital files, they can be printed various times in various sizes. Things I love about using this medium are the way I can get a flat plane of color, I don't have to fight with the medium to get the color I want, and I can print them in different sizes more than once.
